It should be easy to hate a record that begins, "I wish I was different/Not so unstable", in a voice somewhere between Little Red Riding Hood and Cerys Matthews. Anyone who feels obliged to declare their madness is probably the kind of person who believes a velvet smoking jacket to be untrammelled eccentricity. Yet there's something truly wrong here, both in singer's Andrea's sweetly suicidal intonations - "I hurt myself then blame you/Don't touch my stuff because you know I'll be coming back" - and in the clotted backing, the sound of The Bangles if they came from Betws-y-Coed and had a Damo Suzuki fixation. Melys mix pop and electronica without making it sound like they got the recipe from Delia Smith (hello, Dubstar) and that alone makes it worth following them over the edge. Jump right in. |
