| Melys (Live Review) |
What happened? Did I miss something? For tonight, Derrero are actually interesting. Whereas once it was easy to label Derrero as `proficient, yet boring`, now they appear to have become genuinely exciting. Their aprenticeship wit ex-Boo Radley Martin Carr aka Brave Captain, seems to have yeilded positive results with songs with definate structures and interesting melodies. This is a good thing. Derrero are ploughing a Seventies-style furrow with surprisingly furtile results. Melys, on the other hand, have always been brilliant live, and tonight's show only serves to reinforce that. On record their sound lacks certain oomph, but live they are a screaming four-headed rock monster. Future historians will find in Melys one of rock's true mysteries: how cana woman so small have lungs so big? Andrea Parker's voice covers all bases, from breathy lightness to full-on rock diva with ease that boarders on breathtaking. Tonight Melys deliver no more than expected, but that is plenty good enough. More please. David Griffiths |
